The Bitfinex Playbook: Two Instruments to Trade a Trend

We all know the saying: buy low, sell high. But a trending market can create opportunities in both directions.

A trend rarely moves in one direction all the way. As momentum builds and bitcoin rallies, traders can go long and profit from rising prices. When the rally runs out of steam and prices pull back, they can profit from the retracement by going short.

Part 1 of The Bitfinex Trending Markets Playbook covered two ways to earn without you needing to have a view on the direction of the market. This time, we’re looking at two Bitfinex instruments for trading a view when you do have one, each with its own mechanics and considerations.

  • Margin Trading, where you buy or short an asset using capital borrowed from the peer-to-peer funding market.
  • And Perpetuals, where you trade a contract that tracks the underlying market, with no expiry and leverage of up to 100x.

And both come with zero trading fees on Bitfinex.

Margin Trading: Benefit From Both the Breakout and the Pullback

Margin Trading lets you take a larger position than your available capital would otherwise allow.

By using your assets as collateral, you can borrow additional funds from Bitfinex’s peer-to-peer funding market and trade with up to 10x leverage, whether your view is bullish or bearish.

Bitfinex currently lists more than 60 margin pairs, including BTC/USD, ETH/USD, SOL/USD and XRP/USD. You can also trade BTC and ETH against euros or pounds, take positions on Tether Gold (XAUt), or trade major cryptocurrencies against BTC rather than the dollar.

And you’re not limited to cash as collateral either. More than 30 different assets can be pledged as collateral, spanning BTC and ETH, USDt, fiat currencies such as USD, tokenised gold and other supported digital assets.

Because you are borrowing to buy the actual asset, you can choose to repay the loan and own the asset outright, with no leverage and no liquidation risk. If the market moves against you, you can also add collateral to support the position. In other words, a margin trade can become a spot holding.

With Bitfinex’s zero trading fees, the only cost of a margin position is the funding interest on what you borrow, at a rate set by supply and demand rather than by the exchange.

Perpetuals: When 10x Isn’t Enough

Margin Trading isn’t the only way to trade a direction.

Perpetual contracts let you go long or short on a market’s price without owning the asset. Take a 3 ETH long on ETH/USD. With margin you can put up 1 ETH, borrow to fund the other 2 and if the price falls you can repay the loan and keep all 3 ETH outright, safe from liquidation. With a perpetual you hold a contract, never the ETH itself. Margin can become ownership. A perpetual only ever tracks the price.

With Perpetuals, there is no expiry, so nothing has to be closed or rolled on a set date, and shorting does not require borrowing the underlying asset first.

Bitfinex Derivatives lists more than 70 perpetual contracts, spanning much more than crypto:

So your Bitcoin, gold, oil or equities view can all sit within the same Bitfinex account.

Trading fees are zero here too, just as they are everywhere else on the platform. What you might pay to hold a perpetual is the funding rate, which passes between longs and shorts rather than going to a lender, so depending which side you are on you either pay it or collect it.

Leverage runs as high as 100x, against 10x on margin. That is the appeal, and it is also the risk. A one percent move against a 100x position is enough to wipe the margin and close it. Size a position so an ordinary pullback cannot take it out.

Trade with Zero Trading Fees

One of the biggest perks of trading either Margin Trading or Perpetuals on Bitfinex is that there are no trading fees. Bitfinex is the first major exchange to remove trading fees entirely, across spot, margin, derivatives, securities and OTC. There are no volume thresholds, no token to hold and no account tier to reach. Every customer gets zero maker and taker fees in every market.

For active traders, that changes the maths:

  • Scalping: Scalpers benefit the most from zero trading fees. People scalp because they would rather collect many small, quick wins throughout the day than wait hours or days to find out whether one position plays out right. The margin on each trade is thin, which makes cost the deciding factor. On most exchanges you pay to open and pay again to close, hundreds of times a day. At zero fees that cost disappears.
  • Day trading: Day traders open and close within the same session. Zero fees give them room to exit, re-enter or take profit in stages, on either instrument, without a charge each time they change their mind.
  • Swing trading: Swing traders hold for days or weeks to capture larger moves. With no fees on entry or exit, the figure to watch over that time is funding: on a margin position you pay interest on what you borrowed, while a perpetual’s funding rate can run for you or against you depending on your side.
  • Hedging: Bitfinex sub-accounts let you hold a long position in one account and a short on the same pair in another. If prices pull back, gains from the short can help offset losses on the long. This gives you another way to manage a position when your long-term view hasn’t changed, but the market in front of you has.

Margin Trading or Perpetuals?

Both let you trade a directional view. The difference is how you want to express it.

In practice, plenty of traders use both. Margin Trading and Perpetuals operate from separate wallets on Bitfinex, so you can hold a Margin Trading position and a Perpetual position at the same time, even in opposite directions. Depending on your strategies and the unique characteristics of these products, you could stay long on BTC through Margin Trading while going short with a BTC perpetual if you expect a temporary pullback.

That gives you another way to act on shorter-term market moves without necessarily closing your existing position.

The honest guidance on leverage: higher is not better. The 100x on perpetuals is a tool for capital efficiency, not a target. The more leverage you use, the less room the market has to move against you before your position risks being liquidated. A trade that works at 5x doesn’t become a better trade at 50x, it simply becomes much easier for a relatively small price move to knock you out of the position.

Whether you choose Margin Trading, Perpetuals or use both, the question is the same: which instrument fits the trade you want to make?

Leverage gives you more exposure, but there’s a trade-off: sometimes the market can move against you and close your trade before your idea has had time to play out. Options fix that.

In Part 3 we cover options and futures on Thalex. An option caps your loss at what you pay for it,  and there’s no price at which you get closed out. Futures are there for leveraged long or short trades, and keeping them beside your options in one account lets the two share margin. In part 3, we will show you how to protect a holding you don’t want to sell.
